MH Sports Illustrated: Winter Edition

Boys Basketball- The Boys Basketball team is led by seniors Derrien Coley, Ryan Kattell, Eric Look, and Daymon Fleming. All players are working hard to get better, and the team plays for each other. With eight conference wins under their belt at press time, the team looks to keep improving and playing hard to win games.

Girls Basketball- This year, several players on the Girls Basketball team have risen to the occasion. This includes Senior Captain Julia Catalano, whose versatility on offense and grit on defense makes her invaluable. Captain Megan Gaeb’s defense causes other teams to change their game plans, and junior Victoria Aspiazu’s mental and and physical toughness are unmatched. Season highlights have been beating Parsippany Hills, Wallkill Valley, and Mt. Olive.

Bowling- The team is led by Captain Tyler Galuska, Assistant Captain Shaun Ireton, and Mike Sperry, who has the highest average on the team. Thus far, the season highlight was placing second at the Morris County Tournament with a high game of 1087 and a high series of 3062. One of the team’s main goals is to qualify for the Tournament of Champions at State Sectionals.

Boys Fencing- Senior captains Matt Graner, Justin Yuan, and Chris Siragusa led Boys’ Fencing to wins at counties and districts. The epee squad of senior Justin Yuan, junior Jay Connell, and sophomore Jerry Hao won both counties and districts. Jerry Hao also won an individual County Championship in epee. The boys continued fencing well and qualified for the Sweet 16 for the second time. Senior Ian Figeroua qualified in foil for the individual state championships.

Girls Fencing- The Girls Fencing team is led by Seniors Lucille Tsao, Brittnee Braun, and Sarah Espineli. Lucille Tsao won Counties by going undefeated and qualified for the state individual championships at Districts. Lucille Tsao and junior Chloe Chinnadurai contributed to the team by coming in second at Districts and having a team match in the Sweet 16. Junior Frannie Lee, sabre, and sophomore Lexi Szewc also had great days at Districts, qualifying for individuals.

Ice Hockey-  The team has an impressive record of 11-5-2 and press time.  Senior Matt Makuch is indispensable as the team’s only goalie. Additionally, senior Justin Nielsen along with sophomore Jake Lissy have been consistent offensive contributors all season long. Juniors Brandon Kwestel and Jon Sperry have held up the defensive core and have been great leaders. Making the state playoffs for the second season in a row has been one of the biggest highlights.  

Boys Indoor Track- The Boys Indoor Track team has been very successful season and looks to continue its tradition. After a second place finish at the Morris County Relays, the team bounced back to win the Morris County Championship. Led by seniors Alex Pai, Nalin Chopra, Michael Creighton, Kenny Moran, and Brandon Figueroa, and junior Daniel Daley, the team is focused on succeeding in state sectionals and groups. They have won countless individual championships and relays. The 4×800 relay maintains its past success and currently holds the US #1 time.

Girls Indoor Track- The Girls Indoor Track team is led by seniors Anjali Pai, Zuriel Medina, and Chioma Eluemunor. The team has had a successful season and looks to keep improving. Chioma has had great individual success thus far after winning the County Championship in the shot put. She looks to improve her throws and place at states and the meet of champions.

Girls Swimming- The Girls Swimming Team had a positive season record of 7-5. The team was led by Senior Captains Shalaka Madge and Hannah Percely, and seniors Kylie Chow, Alex Casco, Mara Russo, and Resham Sansi. The team defeated Morris Knolls for the first time in 4 years with a score of 109-61. They reached the first round of the State Tournament for the first time since 2009.  Senior Hannah Percely, sophomores Kristen Liu and Aidan Pinto, and freshmen Olivia Maute and Maggie Reilly qualified for Counties.

Boys Swimming- The Boys Swim Team finished with a 1-8-1 record. The team was led by Senior Captains Michael Gencarelli, Jack Rickey, and Peter Stobinski, and seniors Adam Byrdak, Sai Gaddam, and Brian Gilfedder. The team did exceptionally well despite its smaller size. Seniors Adam Byrdak and Peter Stobinski, juniors Jake Maute and Kevin Peer, and freshman Ben Sorrentino qualified for the County Tournament. The swimmers are very hardworking and gave a tremendously tough effort throughout the season.

Wrestling- The Wrestling team’s success can be attributed to a collaborative effort, with all seniors contributing to the team’s wins. Key wrestlers include seniors Joey Schiele, Dajon Chappell, Max Halkenhauser, Jose Zaragoza, Philip Grodsky and Sam Weiner. Joey Schiele is Morris Hill’s first Morris County Tournament champion since 2004 and has moved into second all-time in wins with a career record of 91-29, surpassing Dave Young (90 in 1990). Additionally, Dajon Chappell took 4th place at the MCT with Sam Weiner taking 5th place.
