Big Eating: The Food Trends of 2020

2020 was a mélange of unfortunate circumstances, but the food was definitely one of the better factors. Amidst the coronavirus, millions of people found themselves restricted to their homes, taking up cooking and baking as a new hobby. Viral recipes circulated TikTok, Instagram, and WhatsApp, and some of these include, but are not limited to:

  • Dalgona Coffee: This It-Drink took the internet by storm in the beginning of the year. By whisking instant coffee, sugar, and water, you too can replicate the airy concoction and serve a generous heaping onto a cup of milk.
  • Banana Bread: Do you have overly ripe fruit caused by a conflict of wanting to eat healthy yet still refusing to do so? Banana bread offers the perfect solution to your worries, and home bakers proudly flaunted their signature loaves this year.
  • Cloud Bread: Everyone and their mothers wanted to try this twist on traditional sandwich bread. Each “slice” has a souffle-like texture, hence the cloud name.
  • Pancake Cereal: Perfect for the indecisive eater, get the best of both worlds by eating miniature pancakes in lieu of General Mills.
  • Cream Cheese, Taki, and Jalapenos: Notably lacking Gordan Ramsay’s stamp of approval, this combination has gone viral within the past few months, as testers claim the stuffed peppers as a health staple.
  • Milk Alternatives: Moo-ve over cow milk— a greater quantity of Americans have switched to dairy-free alternatives such as soy, almond, oat, rice, and coconut milk.
  • Celebrity Food: If you thought Avengers Infinity War was the most ambitious crossover, you clearly haven’t tried the Charli D’Amelio x Dunkin’ (a cold brew with whole milk and three pumps of caramel swirl), Travis Scott x McDonalds (a combo meal with a Quarter Pounder with cheese, bacon and lettuce, an order of medium fries, BBQ sauce, and a Sprite), or Fall Out Boy x Casa Vega (their “Sugar We’re Goin To Get Tacos” limited menu).
  • Vodka Pasta: If you’re a foodie on TikTok, Jeremy Scheck is a name familiar to you. This Cornell student shared his recipe for Spicy Rigatoni with Vodka Sauce, and everyone from Gigi Hadid to BuzzFeed media raved about it.
