Holiday Movie Preview

You look out the window and the frigid winter wind is howling, making it more uncomfortable to sit near the windows. You sit on the couch wrapped in three different comforters you’ve stolen from each bedroom, desperately trying to escape the straightjacket of blankets to simply change the channel. What on earth can you do to free yourself from the great winter dilemma?

Hollywood knows that many people will chose to go to the movie theatres for a two hour escape from the chilling winter winds, where they will be met with a plethora of box office hits. Not only does the icy wind bring box office hits, but it also brings award winning movies. In the winter months Hollywood studios will revel in the free publicity of the Golden Globes, the SAG awards, the BAFTA’s, and the holy grail of film awards, the Oscars. With the release of so many great films, you must feel lost. This article will guide you through the chaos of the upcoming winter films.

On November 20th, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay- Part II, the final installment of the Hunger Games trilogy, will be released. Katniss Everdeen, played by Jennifer Lawrence, will take on the oppressive capitol along with her band of rebels for the last time. Speaking of finales, Mockingjay- Part II marks the final film of  actor Philip Seymour Hoffman, who tragically died in 2014. The film promises an emotional close to the Hunger Games series.

New life is pouring into the reinvigorated Rocky tradition with the new film Creed. The new, fresh face of Michael B. Jordan plays Adonis Johnson, the son of friend and trainer of Rocky Balboa, Apollo Creed. Adonis is following in his father’s footsteps and entering the boxing ring. He’s not alone though; he has Rocky Balboa in his corner. Sylvester Stallone is returning to play his iconic role of Rocky Balboa. Creed will hit theatres on November 27th.

Another revival of an iconic series is the release of Star Wars: Episode VII- The Force Awakens. Star Wars fans, including me, are rejoicing at JJ Abrams’ revitalization of the series and his hopes to capture the essence of the original trilogy. The film will be set thirty years after the last film in the original trilogy and will include some original cast members like Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford. Abrams vowed to move away from the computer animation of the prequel trilogy and to include more of practical effects of the original trilogy. The film promises more space action and adventure and will be released on December 18th.

With much anticipation, Quentin Tarantino’s newest film, The Hateful Eight, will be released January 8th. So as not to disappoint his fans and cult following, Tarantino employs his usual cast of characters including Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Tim Roth, and Michael Madsen, with familiar Tarantino themes of blood and revenge. The Hateful Eight tells the story of two bounty hunters that attempt to find shelter during a Wyoming blizzard, but end up entrapped in a plot of murder and deception. The film is sure to be an award contender and an exciting holiday film.

The winter offers one of the best movie-going experiences of the year. With such a high volume of films released, both die hard film fans and modest admirers have an enjoyable experience.
