On October 6th, in connection with the District Summer Read, survivors of the Holocaust visited the MH auditorium.  This year, students had a choice of six books to read, but they all had one thing in common: the extermination of the Jewish people in Nazi Germany.  Because the Holocaust happened long ago, it’s easy for high school students to feel removed from it.  It’s just one of the many topics we go over at school, so many think it can’t possibly affect us,or anyone else in the world today, because it’s over.  Our visit to the auditorium that day taught us otherwise.   Hearing the survivors’ stories in person was a once in a lifetime opportunity.  We learned how they crawled through a window or were beat up by strangers when they were close to our age.

We still learn about genocides like this so we can make sure it never happens again, It’s important that we remember.One of the speakers said,  “Memory is the answer to the tyranny of time.” We learn about the Holocaust today so that we can create a better future for everyone tomorrow.
