In the Heights, the Morris Hills spring musical will be performed on March 16-18, at 7:00 p.m. on all three days. Directed by Mrs. Calzone. the musical takes place in a Dominican American neighborhood of Washington Heights over the course of three days. The show stars Usnavi, a bodega owner, who aspires to return to the Dominican Republic and open a bar with money he dreams of winning in a lottery. The neighborhood is currently struggling to keep up with the rising rent rates. Usnavi, played by senior Akash Bhide, has a crush on Vanessa, played by Vanessa Hartkopf, a beautiful girl working in a salon. While Usnavi pines for Vanessa, his childhood friend, Nina, has just returned from her first year at Stanford University. Nina, played by senior Eleta Milovic, has to break the news that she just lost her academic scholarship and has dropped out of college. The musical tracks the economic hardships that the characters undergo and follows them as they try to find enough money to achieve their dreams. Mrs. Calzone enjoys how, “this show celebrates the Latino culture in Washington Heights, NY and includes the universal themes of family and home.”

Not only does the musical have a captivating plot, but also the show contains music with a heavy Latin influence. The songs from the play include a mixture of English and Spanish and are sure to entertain with their high energy rhythms.

Junior Ryan Spada thinks the show is, “as fun as it is thought provoking. It’s been one of the most enjoyable, challenging, and important productions I’ve been in.” He sees the play as being socially relevant to the changing times and the variety of experiences of people in a single neighborhood.
