On September 4th, 2025, Team Cherry released Hollow Knight: Silksong, the highly anticipated sequel to the original Hollow Knight game. The first Hollow Knight released in 2017 to rave reviews. You play as a nameless insectoid knight who journeys through the world of Hallownest. It received many free updates, and Silksong was teased as one of them. However, the project grew to a size that was unfit for just an update, and it was soon announced that it would become a game of its own. Silksong follows Hornet, a secondary character from the first game, as she is captured and brought to the distant land of Pharloom, a kingdom fallen from grace. Hornet journeys further into the kingdom in order to figure out the truth behind her capture as well as The Haunting, a strange phenomenon that brought the land to its knees. Along the way, she meets charming characters, stunning environments, and a plethora of dangers.
First announced in February of 2019, it became a running joke amongst fans that the game would never be released. However, upon playing the game, it is easy to see why the development took so long. All of the environments and characters are beautifully hand drawn, accompanied by a breathtaking score by Christopher Larkin. There are tons of new features and interesting lore around every corner. Combine this with how small the team of developers is, the long wait makes a lot more sense.
One notable feature of Silksong compared to the original game is the increase of difficulty. Enemies and bosses do more damage than they did in the first game and there are many extremely challenging segments required to beat the game. The original game is also known for being difficult, but a lot of its hardest parts were optional. This increase in challenge turned off a lot of players, especially those who have not played the first game and only purchased the sequel due the insane hype it received. However, just like the first game, the challenges could be made a lot easier by just exploring. Both games encourage adventure by offering great rewards for it. Many upgrades can be found in order to make bosses a lot easier. Tons of guides also exist online to help out players who aren’t accustomed to this level of difficulty.
One of Silksong’s best features is its price, because it costs only twenty dollars. This is a huge deal since bigger companies like Nintendo and Sony continue to charge up the prices of their videogames. Seventy dollars is slowly becoming the norm for game prices, much to the dismay of consumers. Some games, like the newly released Mario Kart World, even cost eighty dollars. It gets even more expensive since you need the five hundred dollar Nintendo Switch 2 console to even buy the game. Silksong is available on nearly all platforms, and is a fourth of the price that Nintendo is selling Mario Kart World at. Silksong takes on average thirty to forty hours to beat just the main story, and has even more hours of content in order to one hundred percent the game.
Hollow Knight: Silksong is the perfect game for somebody looking for an immersive world, interesting story and characters, and a rewarding challenge. It expands upon the lore and gameplay features of the original Hollow Knight while offering a challenge that even veterans of the first game will struggle to overcome, while only costing twenty dollars.
