On Nov. 2, there was a role reversal, as our Scarlet Knights junior and senior girls played a game of flag football under the guidance of some of our own seasoned football players. Both teams had brief pre-game practices, making the exciting game even more impressive. When asked about the amount of time the teams had to dedicate, junior cornerback Kelly Zeman had this to say: “It’s so much fun even though it’s only two practices and the game!” Meanwhile senior linebacker Lucy Gioioso also noted the limited practices (and the food provided) when she stated, “We [briefly] prepared before the game and got McDonald’s at practice.”
The game began very strongly for the junior team with them gaining a decent lead over our seniors, notably with junior running back Zoe Turner making the first touchdown of the game. However, the tides later turned as the seniors caught up. The score was neck and neck for a while as both the juniors and the seniors put lots of energy into the game. There was a huge amount of audience support for both sides. Eventually the seniors took the lead away, but not by much, from the juniors. The juniors fought hard to tie the game, giving it their all. However, the seniors would soon claim victory as they ran one more touchdown, leaving the score 18-12.
When asked about their experience, the seniors and juniors gave similar reviews. Linebacker Lucy Gioioso remarked, “I would recommend rising juniors and seniors to sign up next year because it was super fun, especially with friends.” Cornerback Kelly Zeman agreed with her sentiment, stating, “I really enjoyed playing!… You get to learn something new and it goes to a good cause. No harm in signing up because you may meet new people and you get to experience something different.”
All-in-all, rising juniors and seniors should definitely look into participating in the Powderpuff game, as it is a fun, positive experience. Also, any rising junior and senior boys should look into cheering our women Knights on next year with the Morris Hills Cheer Team. Not only will Powderpuff give you a notable high school memory, it is also a great experience for students and endorsed by this year’s star players for any upperclassmen next school year!
