With the holiday season approaching, the String Theory club finds its home at Morris Hills as they come together to help children who are less fortunate.
Founded by two 10th graders, Mahi Desai and Caitlin Kang have collaborated and worked together to create a club for a hobby that they have a passion for.
Mahi said, “Since the end of last year, I liked the idea of having a crochet club at the school but didn’t know a way to bring it up. I looked for different opportunities and people to talk to, and I got a rough idea of what I needed to do. The idea died down over the summer, but when I came back into school, I was determined to make it happen.”
After sharing her ideas with Caitlin, both of them realized they shared a love for crocheting and knitting, and the pieces clicked into place. “It was truly great collaboration and amazing teamwork,” Mahi said. “I feel that we supported each other and were able to bounce off each other’s thoughts!” After facing many challenges and sending countless emails, the club was approved!
With the formation of the String Theory club, they strive towards helping children and aim to donate items to charities like Children Home Society of New Jersey. “Caitlin and I plan to split up as she would teach knitting to those interested and I would teach crocheting,” said Mahi. “Our hope is to teach the basics over the first few meetings and then begin creating donatable items for the children such as toys and wearable items.”
Additionally, they are holding a yarn drive in order to gain more supplies and contributing would be a great help for many of the children receiving these items. Anyone interested or shares a love of knitting and crocheting can join to share their passion and help out the community – one stitch at a time!
