Before Mrs. Rome stood at the front of the classroom, with a red marker in hand, she was just another student walking through the halls of Morris Hills High School.
Now, decades later, that passion to teach has become a remarkable journey — one built on wisdom, dedication, and a deep connection to the school. As Mrs. Rome prepares to close this meaningful chapter in June, the school community reflects on the impact she has made as a teacher, mentor, and lifelong Scarlet Knight.
As one of Morris Hills’ own, Mrs. Rome credits her time as a student for the special connection she has always felt with the school.
“Morris Hills will always be my home,” she said, a statement that has been evident in everything from her teaching style to the Scarlet Knight merchandise she wears daily.
Known for her sense of humor, love for math, and her respectful approach to teaching, Mrs. Rome has always treated her students as capable, unique individuals. “Although there have been many changes, it has always been about making connections with my students and showing love for the subject I am teaching,” she said.
Outside the classroom, her commitment to the school is just as strong. She has spent years coaching Cross Country and both Indoor and Outdoor Track, and can often be found at athletic events keeping score, managing sites, or cheering on the school.
Whether it’s volleyball in the fall, basketball in the Winter, or track in the spring, her school spirit is constant and contagious.
Over her lengthy career at Morris Hills High School, Mrs. Rome has found joy in working with students at all levels. “Being able to work with them in a way that helps them to be their best,” she said, “has been the most rewarding part of this journey.”
“Every year, a new group comes in and challenges you in a new way. They keep everything fresh and new,” she added.
Mrs.Rome believes the true magic of Morris Hills lies in its people. “Everyone is always looking out for everyone else. There is always someone to turn to when you are struggling, and always someone ready to celebrate your victories,” she said.
Her students often point out that during every class period, at least two or three visitors stop by — proof of the lasting legacy she has left on the school.
“I hope that I have taught [my students] not to take themselves too seriously. Nothing is so terrible that it can’t be overcome,” she said.
From the classroom to the track field, and every scoreboard in between, Mrs.Rome shares her final piece of advice to oncoming students and faculty to “Be happy. Have fun. Make the best of whatever life presents to you.”
We wish you the best, Mrs. Rome, and we’re so grateful for the impact you have left on the Morris Hills family!
