The Morris Hills Key Club, a club that focuses on volunteer work on the community level, is advised by Ms. Maloupis. Members are pushed to aim for 10 hours or more of volunteer work every year. Board Members are urged to participate in all or most of the events. Ms. Maloupis feels that “as the largest student-run organization, Key Club is focused on leadership, inclusivity, and character building. We offer many service and learning opportunities in our local community while also connecting members nationally and globally.”
After COVID-19, the Key Club faced struggles finding in-person volunteer opportunities. Despite this, the club persevered and (as of 2022) partnered with the Kiwanis organization based out of Rockaway. The Kiwanis organization helps the Key Club find in-person volunteer options and in exchange, the Key Club also provides the Kiwanis organization with service opportunities. Due to the Kiwanis organization partnering with the Key Club, student members with a passion for service can continue doing Key Club work throughout college and even as an adult if they join the organization.
Not only does the Key Club help others through volunteer work, it also provides opportunities for its own members through scholarships and travel. Club member Justin Chen was able to apply to become a district board member for the Key Club and traveled to California. When asked about his experience, Justin stated, “Key Club is an amazing organization where students of all kinds are able to come together and celebrate service in our local communities. This year I have the honor of serving as a Lieutenant Governor for the New Jersey District and was able to go to California for the annual International Convention in Anaheim! It was an outstanding experience where I was able to meet new peers from across the globe, discuss all topics regarding service, and go to DisneyLand!”
In addition, members of Key Club are encouraged to bring their own causes and organizations to the club. This means that the people in the club can present specific service projects that they’re passionate about and get the support they need through the organization.
Despite being the largest student-run organization, the Key Club is always open to new members. When asked why people should join the Key Club, member Binh Nguyen had this to say: “Key club is such a fun and involved club to join if you want to gain volunteer hours and help others! I have been in the club for two years and I encourage everyone to join!”
Club President Keshav Sheth shared this sentiment, saying, “The main reason why someone should join Key Club is that it’s a great opportunity to get involved in the community. We offer many events throughout the year, so members are free to participate in the ones that appeal to them the most.”
All in all, from raising money for teens receiving cancer treatment to donating and wrapping gifts for kids in need around the community, the Key Club has unlocked the secret to meaningful community service.
