Over the summer, a well-known organization, Garden State Esports, invited the Morris Hills Rocket League team to compete in the rigorous battle known as the Black Rocket competition.
The team, led by Junior Andres “Andy” Serna, won the tournament, a highly competitive interstate esports competition. The rules state that each will have its respective teams go against each other and face the winners from the opposing state. These teams must win the Rocket League match in a “best of 5” fashion, meaning the winning team must reach 3 wins first. The winning team gains the honor and a $5,000 check for new gaming equipment.
Despite winning, the team had quite the opposite of a smooth journey. During the tournament, highly competitive high schools rivaled the MH Rocket League team with incredibly close scores. Andy highlights that the tournament was “extremely exhilarating and the tension was high in every match.”
In the final match, the team made a valiant comeback after losing 2-1 to win the tournament and place the enormous $5,000 check in the hands of the MH Rocket League team. Finally, to put the cherry on top, the group unselfishly donated the funds to a less fortunate school in New Jersey to help spread the pleasure and entertainment of Esports to students who may not have sufficient equipment available.
The squad describes this win as a rewarding and enjoyable experience that will reflect the performance in the coming season. This memorable achievement is a substantial step into constant success for the future of the MH Esports organization and an exceptional addition to the many triumphs that Morris Hills has seen. He hopes to guide the team into many more tournaments, continue to grow, and enjoy the Rocket League game.
Finally, in the wise words of Captain Andy Serna, “The best part was holding that big ol’ check.”
