Morris Hills takes on a yearly Voter Registration Drive held by the Social Studies Honor Society around the beginning of the school year. This year’s drive was held on September 16th in the gym lobby during all lunch blocks. During this, you are given a flyer with a QR code to scan in order to register to vote. Some requirements in order to register to vote include: You must be a U.S. citizen, at least 17 years of age, but you may not vote until you are 18, be a resident of the country for 30 days before the election, and not be serving a sentence of incarceration.
But exactly, what is the Voter Registration Drive? “The purpose is to bring awareness to high school students about how they can register to vote and what the basic requirements to vote are”, says Dr. Beck, who helps run the Drive. “Each year, we partner with the Rockaway/Denville Women’s Club with the Social Studies Honor Society to organize a Voter Registration Drive for students”, Dr. Beck adds. “The day of, we set up tables in the gym lobby and we provided a series of handouts for students in both English and Spanish. We also provide QR codes for students so they can use their cell phone to access the Voter Registration and sign up that way. Our goal is to make it easy and accessible for students. We were there to help facilitate that process for students,” Dr. Beck ends off with.
Morris Hills is always running fun fairs and drives to help students go forward in their future. For more information about next year’s specific Voter Registration Drive and more information about it in general, contact Dr. Beck and Mrs. Sherburne for more information.
