Recently, freshman Megha Srinivas was accepted into the prestigious American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) All-Eastern Honor Choir, a highly selective group representing 11 states on the East Coast. Megha was chosen out of thousands of other students and will be attending a conference in Providence, Rhode Island with the other members.
The All-Eastern Honor Choir is one of the ACDA’s most competitive choirs, as it is open to all singers in their member high schools’ choral programs. These candidates submit audio recordings of themselves singing a song of their choice and turn it in online. For her audition, Megha chose to sing a song titled “One Morning In the Month of May”.
Besides the All-Eastern Honor Choir, high school students can also audition for area, regional, and statewide honor choirs, which tend to be less demanding. Plus, Megha plans to audition for the National Honor Choir, the most challenging to be accepted into.
Outside of the school’s chorus and the honor choir, Megha takes part in several other musical activities. She was previously part of the ACDA’s regional choir and is currently in the New Jersey Youth Choir, another exclusive program. Her passion for various types of music even extends to playing the alto saxophone for the school’s marching band. Not to mention, Megha has learned Carnatic music, a style unique to Southern India.
To Megha, music is therapeutic and a form of expression. She explains, “Music just makes me feel so much better, and it’s a huge stress reliever. I just know that at the end of a long day, I can start singing and I immediately feel better.”
Music has been a key aspect of Megha’s life since she was a little kid. “I’ve been singing practically since before I could talk,” she recalls. One vivid memory she has is of a solo she was selected for out of 50 other classmates in fourth grade. This moment laid the foundation for her future successes.
As a member of the honor choir, Megha will be part of a conference taking place in Providence, Rhode Island in late February. There, she will be rigorously rehearsing and performing in front of huge audiences alongside the other members of the choir. The conference will span three full days and will be an outstanding opportunity to learn and improve as well as share what she already knows.
