eSports is an increasingly popular, competitive field. We have a club dedicated to it here at Morris Hills High School. But what is the purpose of the club? According to Will Forte, a starter for the club in regional competitions, it is simple. “The goal of the club is to have fun gaming with your friends, hopefully while winning at the same time!”
When asked about the club environment, Will describes it as “whole, fun and laid-back (literally–we have new gaming chairs you can lean in).” He said, adding “That is, if you don’t sit next to the competing players during game number one.”
The club is currently playing Rocket League, but will soon open up to other games such as Valorent and Overwatch 2.
The club has proven its ability to win. According to the League website, the team is undefeated and is number one in its conference right now. And Will said the more the merrier, even trying to convince the Hilltopper staff to join.
Mrs. Sabatini, the eSports advisor, believes that the club’s main priority is and should be connecting people with similar interests. She also states that her future vision for the club is “to develop strong enough teams in each game (Rocket League, Overwatch & Valorant) to compete in the championship league,” as well as to stream the school’s matches on Twitch by the spring.
The club is also looking to hold fundraisers in the future. Although some may not see it as a “sport” at all, the fact is that competitive gaming is taking off in popularity. It is most certainly part of the future of competition.
