This month, thousands of people will participate in No-Shave November, a charity project designed to raise money for cancer research, prevention and education. No-Shave November began as a small Facebook page in 2009 with only a few dozen participants. Now, it has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars and has thousands of participants every year.

The event is centered on, as the name implies, not shaving during the month of November. Participants then donate the money they would have spent on hair “grooming,” such as razors or salon visits. As of November 11, 2014, No Shave November has raised over $588,000. No Shave November is partnered with the American Cancer Society, “to ensure that the funds raised in the annual campaign would be distributed to all of the areas that matter to the team: research, prevention, education, and continuing care”(no-shave.org).

In addition to the thousands of participants across the country, some of our Morris Hills teachers and administrators are participating as well. Mr. Toriello said he first heard about No Shave November on the news but began to think about having Morris Hills staff members participate in 2013 when his brother-in-law’s school encouraged their teachers to let their hair grow free. In total, Morris Hills staff members have raised $450, and Mr. Toriello says that he plans to make No Shave November a new Morris Hills tradition. When asked if he regretted not shaving at any point, Mr. Toriello said that he had not and that it has brought the school together for a good cause.
