Wednesday- Is It Worth the Watch?

We are often reminded that patience is a virtue, especially when it comes to the monotonous shows on Netflix that always seem to have the same storylines. But as soon as “Wednesday” was released on Netflix on Nov. 23, 2022, all those qualities of boredom and impatience flew out the window. The dark appearance of the scenery in the opening episode takes on a mysterious yet comforting hue that compelled us to click the “Play Next Episode” button after the episode ended. This show provides the adventure we had both wished to discover for years, and we are proud to declare it a must-watch.

“Wednesday” is the story of teenager Wednesday Addams who is viewed as an outsider at her school due to her unusual dress and peculiar personality. Desperate for Wednesday to interact with other children, her parents Morticia and Gomez Addams enroll her in Nevermore Academy, the peculiar boarding school where they met. In fact, Gomez states, “Nevermore is like no other boarding school. It’s a magical place.” Wednesday at first is against the idea; however, she meets many along the way who allow her to be who she is. “Wednesday” can be classified as a coming-of-age series, but the gripping mystery she strives to solve is one that places this series over the charts. It’s a flawless blend of growing up and adventure.

This mysterious show has captured the attention of members of Generation X. Having grown up with the Addams Family being shown on television, this revamp of such a popular series is quite appealing to them. In addition, most popularity was generated by the lead actor herself, Jenna Ortega. Many members of Generation Z have grown up with Jenna Ortega, watching her skillfully act on the Disney channel and in various other movies and television shows. Hearing the news that a beloved actor will be playing the lead role as Wednesday motivated many teenagers to watch. After the release, even more popularity was initiated by social media. Teenagers who loved the show began spreading their enthusiasm throughout TikTok, Instagram, and other sites, despite what the character Wednesday says about social media — that it’s  “a soul-sucking void of meaningless affirmation.”

The unique twist on “The Addams Family” leaves viewers falling in love with the peevish teenage Wednesday. The butterflies we felt in our stomachs while watching her make an effort at romance or our eyes widening while attempting to solve the murder alongside her, make the show worth watching. Her peculiar nature and her humorous wit forge a character that everyone will love. Certain aspects of the show are especially relatable to teenage audiences. The rivalry between peers, minor indulgences in romance, and the angst over parents make the show something that people can relate to despite its unusual circumstances.

“Wednesday” explores the Addams family’s lives outside of 21 Chester Place. The actors and actresses carefully chosen to play these roles did justice to every single one of the characters, such as Jenna Ortega herself.  She has succeeded in making Wednesday Addams a witty YA thriller that grabs the attention of everyone who stumbles upon it. So grab your popcorn, turn off the lights, and cuddle in with your loved ones, as you watch “Wednesday” make history as one of the only shows on Netflix that has surpassed one billion views. And remember, “Wednesday Addams is not the girl of your dreams. She’s the stuff of your nightmares.”
